In 1928, when Mother Teresa was only eighteen, Gonxha Agnes Bojaxhiu joined the Sisters of Loreto, an Irish community of nuns with missions in India. From 1931 to 1948, Mother Teresa taught in  Calcutta, the suffering and poverty she glimpsed outside the convent made such deep impressions on her that in 1948 she received permission from her superiors to leave the convent school and devote herself to working in the slums of Calcutta.

Raghu Rai, one of the greatest and contemporary photographers from India, and one of the 20 most influential Asian photographers, publishes his best images of Saint Teresa  through five decades from early 1970s, in graphic detail, his memories and observations in his latest book which will certainly of great interest to both collectors and photo enthusiasts.

Raghu Rai was a Portege of Henri Cartier-Bresson, who appointed Rai, then a young photojournalist, whose black white pictures were out of this world, was appointed to Magnum photos in 1977.

Raghu Rai born in 1942 in a small village called Jhang in Western Punjab, Today’s Pakistan, documented the canonization ceremony in St Peter’s Square at the Vatican and the pictures he took were to complete his pictorial biography. He started his career as a photographer for the “Statesman” newspaper. His Phenomenal and lifetime achievement would be for Green Peace when he did an in-depth documentary on the chemical disaster which happened in Bhopal in 1984. Raghu Rai followed his way with her through the streets of Calcutta, where the ever-present poverty and distress illustrated the need for Mother Teresa’s work. His photographs recall their encounters and imbued with the spirit that inspired him.
