£500 rent for a cupboard under the stairs in Clapham

A cupboard under the stair case has been up for rent in Clapham in South West London for 500 per month plus bills. The listing on the London2let.com website advertises for a “ friendly, open-minded and outgoing person” to join the house share with three others.

A flatshare in Clapham which was described as “furnished” in an online listing which Ms Alex Lomaz 23 from Nottingham, went to view was shocked and related to Harry Potter who lived under the stairs in Privet Drive,  and she posted images on Twitter of the “bed under the stairs- I was obviously shocked but was all-too-polite, I think. There was a landlord and I was shown the kitchen and the under-stairs cupboard and he seemed deadly serious, which is the worrying part”.

Ms Lomax said the man who showed her the room did not apologise for the condition and told her “it was the last room to rent in the place.  Average room rents in Clapham Junction for £784 a month, so £500 is a bargain but this ad certainly isn’t offering a room” Matt Hutchinson director of flatshare and houseshare website.
