The entire population of Italy are told to stay at home to curb the coronavirus outbreak and seek permission for essential travel.

Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte  said the measures were designed to protect the most vulnerable “There is no more time”.

Italy’s coronavirus death toll lappet from 366 to 463 on Monday as cases of virus h. ve been confirmed in all 20  Italian regions.

In an interview with La Repubbica newpaper,  Mr. Conte said of the outbreak: “ I have been thinking about the old speeches of Winston Churchill, It is the darkest hour, but we will make it No more nightlife. We can’t allow this anymore since they are occasions for contagion .”

All sporting events including  football matches are suspended nationwide in Italy and universities will remain closed until 3 April.

Passengers departing on flights will have to justify themselves, as will all those who arrive by plane. There are control at train stations to check the temperatures of passengers . Cruise ships are also forbidden to dock at various Italian ports.

Seven inmates died amid riots at prisons across Italy after authorities  suspended all visits as part of attempts to contain the spread of the virus, as trouble began in the northern city of Modena at the Sant’Anna Prison. It is thought two of the dead lost their lives due to drug overdoses after they raided a prison hospital for the heroin substitute methadone.

The number of infections worldwide is now over 111, 000  with 3900 deaths.

In Italy there are more than 9,100 confirmed infections and more than 460 people have died.

Iran reported 43 new deaths  with their death toll reaching 237 and 7,161 infected.

China which has recorded the highest number of fatalities reported only 40 new cases of Covid-19 the lowest since 20 January.

Canada confirmed the first death related to the Coronavirus. In Vancouver, British Columbia.

In the US the number of confirmed cases now exceeds 500.

 In the UK  a fifth person died and there were 319 confirmed cases of coronavirus.

 People will be asked to self isolate for seven days after showing mild symptoms under the new approach, the UK’s chief medical adviser Prof Chris Whitty said. The UK government has announced it is to extend shop delivery hours to ensure that supermarket have basic items amid fears of stockpiling concerns.

Globla shares have suffered their worst day since the financial crisis leading to 8 per cent drop in London’s FTSE 100 wiping out £125bn off the value of major UK firms.

In the US the major stock indexes fell so sharply as the market opened that trading was halted for 15 minutes to curb panic selling.

England’s Six Nations games against Italy  on 14 and 15 March have been postponed.

Dublin’s annual St Patrick’s Day parade the largest on the island of Ireland, was cancelled  on Monday, as the total number of positive cases in the Republic of Ireland rose to 21.
