Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby – father of five has now discovered his true parentage – editorial

Justin Welby - Archbishop of Canterbury

Its a strange but true phenomena that when we are growing up many of us fantasise that our parents are not our parents and we are in some way not related to our father and mother.  In Justin Welby’s case, who is to know if he ever felt the same way? Well if he did think his father was not his real father, it seems that in his case, he was right.  His mother – still living and doing voluntary work with less fortunate people especially with alcohol related problems, had an affair with his real father much around the time of her marriage to the man who brought him up as his father. His secret real father was Winston Churchill’s private secretary Anthony Montague Browne. His family father was Gavin Welby – a whisky salesman and son of a jewish immigrant briefly married to his mother Jane. He later went on to court Vanessa Redgrave without marrying her.

Hair samples and cheek swabs were taken apparently to solve the mystery of who Justin Welby’s – our Archbishop’s real father was.  Tests proved close to conclusive it was in fact Anthony Montague Browne.  Justin Welby said the “revelation” of his true paternity was a “complete surprise” and a “story of redemption and hope”.  He has now discovered he has a half sister Jane who is 3 years his senior.

Previously men born “illegitimately” were barred from being Archbishops but a change in the law in the 50’s removed that bar.

Justin Welby and his wife Caroline have ridden several “storms” in their marriage and have now dealt with this latest revelation together with great fortitude.  We at The Saturn Herald wish them both together with their large extended family very well.  We apologise for the lateness of this story being uploaded on our site.

Peace
