England Win by 1 wicket and level the series

On Day 4 Ben Stokes hits an unbeaten 135 to carry England to an one-wicket wiu over Australia that keep the Ashes hopes alive at Headingly, England’s highest run chase in Test history. Stokes was dropped at 116 by Harris and survived a lbw shout on 131 as Australia had no more reviews left . Ben Stokes and Jack Leach 1* added 76 runs for the last wicket.

England’s previous highest successful run chase in Ashes had come in 1928/29 when they chased down 332.

Australia missed so many opportunities as Ben Stokes took on the Australian bowling and hit the most audacious shots when the game was lost.

Jack Leach said “Ben Stokes said I’d only face one or two balls an over and told me to back up to run two. Then every ball I faced I just really focused on seeing it off. I felt okay switched on, it was amazing. That’s the best one not out I’ll ever get. I’d take back that 92 to keep that one. I was running towards him after he hit the winning runs and it was the best feeling ever”.

Ex-England captain Michael Vaughan said “ That win is massive for Joe Root. I’ve been in that situation where your team is really struggling. This is his time to try and win an Ashes series on home turf. All England captains need a great all-rounder. I had Andrew Flintoff. Mike Brearley had Ian Botham and Joe Root has Ben Stokes. You have to remember that colossal spell Stokes bowled as well.”
