Europe regained the Ryder Cup after they beat United States 17½-10½.

The Americans put their best players out at the top of Sunday’s singles order and their gamble appeared to be paying off for captain Jim Furyk with three wins and a halved match out of the first five.

Furyk said: “ We got some momentum but the Europeans responded well as they have all week. Europe did a good job on a golf course they know pretty well but they did a great job playing it. They hit key shots and knocked in the clutch putts.”

Both opening matches went down to the 18th, with Justin Thomas defeating Mcllroy after an epic battle to put American’s first point on the board before Brooks Koepka rolled in a three-footer to share match with Paul Casey – the only one of the 28 matches to end all square.

Mcllroy was two ahead after four holes but Thomas hit back with birdies on the eight and 10th. They were still level on the 18th but after Thomas boomed his drive down the middle, Mcllroy pushed his tee shot into a bunker.
