ICON AWARD FROM RAINDANCE 28TH FILM FESTIVAL TO ACTOR JUDE LAW

Actor Jude Law has received the Icon Award award this year from Raindance. A second person who has received the award this year is Sally Hawkins.   The award  has 3 R’s on it and is three dimensional. One “R “ is in a flashy sparkling steel to commemorate excellence.  Jude was interviewed by Elliot Grove on a screen to celebrate his award……

Jude is looking forward to 2021 when he will go to Vancouver to play Captain Hook in a David Lowry production of Peter Pan.

Elliot and Jude talked extensively about the process of filmmaking, and Jude observed that in one sense it is a “process of editing”.  Independent Film was discussed and Jude said he sees it as an environment “in which you feel this sense of community and understanding.”  Starting in Independent Film is vital to an actor.  What you capture is a sense of passion and commitment. The beautiful crazy obsession comes about for the cast and crew all being together to create the finished project.

Jude has gone back and forth with Independent Film throughout his career and he acknowledges its essence and its struggle.  He is also a fan of telling stories.  At this point he grabbed a moment to say he and his son Raff have made films since Raff was four years old.

Asked what his most iconic role was, Jude replied that in a funny way he would almost throw out that questions to the audience! Dumbeldore in “Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find” them was conjured up as a definite possible.

Jude’s personal memorable  iconic characters include the stars of “Withnail and I”, he loves “Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid” and “Cool Hand Luke”.  He says when he was young he saw Charlie Chaplain appear in films “over and over again”. His father projected films onto the interior wall which gave him great pleasure and learning.

Going back to Independent Film, Jude observes that there is a lack of time to many of them which forces you to arrive, to focus and it gives you the adrenaline that creates really interesting decision making. In  Indie film, there is a “greater sense of camaraderie!”  There is a desire to be together and focussed and to operate together.  In “big” films, there can be a “drift”.

On conclusion, we are fortunate nowadays, that we have at our disposal the chance to make films – we have the technology easily available.  Keep making films, keep telling stories.  It’s a challenging career, and keep asking yourself about motivation.

“Being scared the night before filming is a good feeling. 2020 has tested us.  Good stories come out of hard times.”

Jude and his son Raff star in a five minute Raindance entry short – “The Hat.” Amongst the many films Jude has starred in are included: – “The Talented Mr Ripley,” “Enemy at The Gates,” “Cold Mountain,” “Alfie” and “The Holiday.” Raff is soon to star in a Charles Dickens saga so watch this space!

Well done Jude – enjoy your award and do keep developing new projects! Hope your son’s big new entry into the film industry produces great results!
