Mike Sonko, Kenya’s Nairobi Governor’s COVID-19  essential care packages include a few small bottles of the cognac, Hennessy and typical food staples.

The governor justified the inclusion of alcohol as a very good “throat sanitizer”.

Sonko said in a video “I think from the research conducted by the World Health Organisation and various organisations it has been believed that alcohol plays a major role in killing the coronavirus.w We will have small bottles of Hennessy in the food packs that we will be giving it to our people. ”

World Health Organisation  warns that drinking alcohol  does not protect you against COVID-19 and can be dangerous, but Mike Sonko’s interpretation is that in the absence of a credible vaccine or cure, alcohol would provide some protection.

WHO advises alcohol can weaken the health of an individual and make them more vulnerable to several viruses including coronavirus.

Githinji Gitahi, CEO of Amref Health Africa a medical non-profit organisation, in a post on Twitter condemned Sonko’s claim  and appealed to Kenyans  to dump the alcohol.

Meanwhile “Hennessy would like to stress that the consumption of our brand or ant other alcoholic beverage does not protect against the virus.”
