It was Boris Johnson in October 2015 who originally sustained the good idea of having a “Night Mayor” to watch over the nocturnal side of London.  Now Mayor Sadiq Khan is continuing the search for the right person who will work a 2.5 day week on a salary of £35 thousand per year.  Learning from a successful programme in Amsterdam where Mirik Milan has created a safer night life for people in Holland, the announcement of the person appointed to the new post should be soon. We now have 24 hour tubes at the weekend which some say are unsafe and insanitary as people urinate and vomit and are at risk of falling on stairs or escalators due to excessive alcohol intake and the £26 billion a year nighttime economy in London will still somehow find a person to find a way to ameliorate this situation that is for sure. Appointment of a Night Mayor will emulate other cities of not only Amsterdam but also Paris and Zurich.

The new night tube is directly responsible for more than 2,000 new jobs.  Khan has said “I’m delighted to begin my search for a Night Czar.  We will work together with venues, authorities, developers and punters to ensure London thrives as a 24 hour city”.

Of course, there has always been the reliable black cab and now Uber or a friend’s sofa hotels hostels or even a park bench but a 24 tube will definitely lift the spirits of those who can’t bear to leave for home until the small hours.

Enjoy
