Many of us take the buildings around us for granted.  We pass them on a bus, work worship  or live in them and sometimes never look into the complex subject of the designing placing and construction of them.  But this book breaks the mould and makes us think!

This handy sized book measuring 5 by 7 and a half inches, by author Matthew Freedman,  covers 75 buildings around the UK together with a photograph of each one and a detailed though unfussy one page description and acount of the building’s background, of course itemising the architects for each building.  It could prove well worth visiting some of these buildings which were all completed since 1918.  31 people were involved in researching for and writing about and photographing buildings for the book. However a list of 100 more buildings is at the back of the book to whet your appetite once you become obsessed with these eclectic and occasionally though not always “samey” edifices. Modern architecture is a multifaceted subject and there are wonderful surprises in the book including The Italian Chapel Lamb Hom Orkney, Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral, No1 Poultry, (completed in 1997), and the Water Pumping Station at The Isle of Dogs.  There are also very good photographs of council estate buildings, and The National Theatre and Peckham Library also feature.  The choices of buildings range from Cornwall to Orkney and from 1926 to 2016. The book is published by Luster and the ISBN number is at the foot of this article.
