Poland will meet Portugal in the quarter-finals of Euro 2016 after beating Switzerland on penalties in the first knockout game of the tournament.

Arsenal newcomer Garnit Xhaka was the only player to miss in the shootout with Polish Grzegorz Krychowiak scoring the winning spot-kick.

Jakub Blaszczykowski put Poland ahead six minutes before half-time. Switzerland equalized through Xherdan Shaqiri’s 82nd minute, overhead kick from 18 yards. Poland reached the quarter-finals for the first time, after dominating the first half, as they should have been ahead after 22 seconds Milik shooting over after Yann Sommer;s throw out to Johan Djourou almost let in Lewandowski. Switzerland had 56% possession and had 8 shots on target with 13 corners.

Wales reached the quarter-finals of Euro 2016, their major tournament finals since the 1958 World Cup, to face either Belgium or Hungry in Lille on Friday, as Gareth McAuley’s own goal gave them victory over Northern Ireland in a tense match. Northern Ireland defended much of the game and snuffed out Wales’ attacking threat.

Wales managed only one shot on target. Northern Ireland centre-back McAuley turned Gareth Bale’s low whipped cross into his own net.

Wales had 56% possession but had only one shot on target.
