117 Sterling Billionaires based in Britain
Britain’s wealthiest 1000 people are collectively worth £547bn, up from £258bn in 2009, an increase of 112 per cent. Those on the lowest rankings have around £100m, £45m more than in2009 and £15m more than last year, the biggest leap in 18 years According to Sunday Times Rich List.
Among the new entries are Hollywood actor George Clooney and his lawyer wife Amal, listed at 790, worth an estimated 121m. Other celebrities include David and Victoria Beckham worth £240m, Apprentice Star 68 year old Alan Sugar is now a billionaire for the first time 101 in the rich list, after his wealth increased from £140m to £1.04billion. Lord Sugar has £ 700m of real estate. Which nets profits for Amshold, his holding company, soared to £552m in 2013-14.
There are now 117 Sterling billionaires based in Britain, up 12 per cent from last year, out of which only 62 are British – Including Sir Richard Brandson, Mike Ashley Sport Direct founder and Sir James Dyson.
At the top of Britain’s rich list is Ukraine-born ( Odessa) 57 year old Len Blavatnik, who has investments in music industry and media and is worth £13.17bn up form £3.17bn on 2014 and knocks Lakshmi Mittal from the top spot. Len a major American industrialist but personal and business roots are in the former USSR. He is best known for his Warner music group whose artists include Cold Play, and his holdings in online music streaming services including Spotify. He made is money from the breaking up of the Energy and Aluminium groups of former Soviet Union. He donated £75m to Oxford University. He rose from fourth to first after his wealth rose by £3bn.
At Number two are India-born Hinduja Brothers Sri And Gopi Hinduja, who have family interest in Global finance and varied industries and are worth £13bn.The Anglo-Canadian Weston Family, who own Primark as well as Selfridges and Fortnum and Mason in London are third with £ 11bn.
Lakshmi Mittal of Mittal Group saw his fortunes fall by £1.5bn to £9.2bn and Chelsea football Club chairman Roman Abramovich fell by £1.23bn to £7.29bn
