
45 dead, 40 survived as C130 Hercules overshot the runway and crashed



A Philippine military transport plane a C130 Hercules, carrying 92 troops from Cagayan de Oro, northern Island of Mindanao , has crashed in the northern Philippines. Jolo Island at 11:30 local time (03:30GMT). Flames and smoke emerged from the wreckage as forty five died but 40 people survived and were taken to a nearby military hospital.
Hercules was trying to land at Jolo airport when it overshot the runaway, Defence Secretary Delfin Lorenzana said.
The soldiers were part of the military’s stepped-up presence in the southern Philippines to combat Islamist militants such as the Abu Sayyaf group.
Several military personnel on board only recently completed basic military training.
