Torrential rains, overflowing rivers, and landslides have resulted in deaths of 120 people in the Kerala state. Southern Railway and Kochi Metro have suspended their operations in flood-hit Kochi. The entire state of Kerala is on red alert with more rains expected till Saturday. Cochin Airport has been shut till Saturday and Metro service suspended. Helicopters airlifted stranded families from rooftops and dam gates. Fourteen districts and 2482 villages have been worst affected due to the floods.
Several still missing and over 80, 000 persons displaced after continuous days of rain, floods, landslides and major dams overflowing. The Meteorological department forecasted heavy to very heavy rainfall in most places in Idukki, Ernakulam, Palakkad, Wayanad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod districts over the next three days. The entire state is in red alert. Over 20, 000 houses and 10, 000 miles of State PWD roads have been damaged. Maximum damage was caused between 9th and 15th of this month.
The opening of the dam shutters led to large-scale destruction on the river banks. This is one of the worst times for Kerala, God’s own country. The worst hit Idduki hill district where the water in the dam receded to 2, 397.58 ft, raising concerns about floods in fresh downstream areas.
