“Liquor Baron” Vijay Mallya in the news on corruption charges.
Indian businessman and politician and son of Vittal Mallya is ex-Chairman of United Spirits Limited. He also founded Kingfisher airlines and is married to Sameera Tyabjee who is an air hostess for Air India. He served as the National Working President of the Janata Party in 2010.
Now Vittal is the suspect of the alleged violation of foreign exchange rules and is wanted for alleged money laundering offences.
He is said to have violated the provision of the erstwhile Foreign Exchange Regulation Act (FERA) in arranging funds to advertise his company’s liquor products abroad.
Mallya had allegedly paid $200,000 to a British firm for displaying the Kingfisher logo in the Formula One World Championships and other European countries in 1996, 1997 and 1998.
Court appearances have been sporadic. Proceedings have been ongoing to ensure Mallya appears at said court hearings.
