Sunday Times reports on “May Mania”.
Around 50,000 people have joined the Conservative Party since Theresa May became the leader, who shares her name with a dark haired glamour model if google is correct. Grassroots Tories have been increased by 40% in just six weeks.
A record breaking number of people have signed up for the Tory party conference in Birmingham this October where they will see the first female Prime Minister since Margaret Thatcher make a rally cry for the country’s future. Membership nearly halved under David Cameron and the source does mention the gay marriage issue as one of the reasons but this may be simply biased reporting. A lot of lapsed members have rejoined the fold with an essence of “May Mania” being one of the alleged “circumstances.”
The Tory party membership was in top form in the 1950’s with 3m and slumped to as low as 130,000 under Cameron. Today May will be working with her cabinet or some of them at her Grace and Favour home Chequers to make plans for the conference including her new plans for social reform and a “new interventionist industrial strategy”.
Labour has a much higher membership where new members joined before the leadership election boosted numbers to more than 500,000. Tory sources say “the Conservative party is more united than ever and ready to get on with the work of goverening for the whole country”.
