Facebook launches new videocall device
The world’s largest social network, Facebook has launched its unique video calling device dubbed the portal, hoping the new voice controlled hardware will help to retain billions of its users relying on the app to stay in touch with friends and family.
The portal using artificial intelligence will let users make video calls as they walk around their home, to zoom in and out to focus on them, which the company said will given them a “hanging out” experience.
The portal can operate like a smart speaker, as a result of Facebook’s first major partnership with Amazon.
In addition, video calls on Portal are encrypted, so your calls are always secure, as the portal’s camera and microphone can be disabled with one click and it does not use facial recognition according to the company. The smart camera and sound technologies run on the device, rather than on Facebook’s servers.
The Portal is available to pre-order in US in two sizes, the smaller 10-inch display costing $199 and the larger 15.6 inch screen costing $349.
