Foxconn, the Taiwanese group that assembles iPhones and makes everything from smartphones to robots for multinational and Chinese brands  told the Taiwan Stock Exchange on Saturday that it had invested up to $213.5m in a subsidiary in Tamil Nadu, India, since September and acquired land use rights in Vietnam.

SJ Liao, Pegatron’s president, another group with Taipei headquarters that accounts about 30 per cent of Apple’s assembly orders, said it was planning to build a production capacity in India, Indonesia and Vietnam and the pace of expansion outside China might depend on further developments in the US-China trade war.

The downturn in the Chinese economy is driving electronics groups to focus on other large markets outside China.

Apple has already issued a warning that the weak Chinese economy and slower uptake of new IPhone models in developed countries  could shave upto 10 per cent off revenues for the December quarter compared with earlier expectations.

In China Foxcon’s single plant employs 160,000, while Pegatron’s single plant employs 80, 000.

Apple Inc will begin assembling its top selling iPhones in Sriperumbudur town in the southern state of Tamil Nadu which could create 25, 000 jobs.

The Channel Island of Jersey’s 100, 000 population enjoys from the second-fastest mobile download speeds in the world trailing only Singapore, after enhancing its reputation as a technology hub with plans to launch a 5G network by 2021, years ahead of any roll out in the rest of the UK.
