England beat Sri Lanka with a seven-wicket victory in the first Test of a two-match series in Galle.
Resuming on 38-3 needing another 36 for victory, Jonny Bairstow unbeaten at 35 and debutant Dan Lawrence 21 carried England to their target inside 35 minutes on the final morning.
England is now unbeaten in nine tests under Jo0e Root’s captaincy and won four consecutive overseas Tests for the first time since 1957. This victory improved England’s chances of reaching the inaugural World Test Championship final at Lord’s in June, as they remain currently fourth in the standing with Australia, India, and New Zealand.
The Second Test starts at 04:30 GMT on Friday on the same ground.
