India needs 381 to win with nine wickets remaining
Two wickets each for Leach and Anderson as India were bowled out for 337 a lead of 241. England chose not to enforce the follow-on, but lose Burns first ball.
Root scores 40, as Ashwin takes a six-wicket haul.
Ishant takes the 300th wicket by dismissing Lawrence lbw.
Immediately after a boundary sweep Ashwin strikes as he comes round the wicket pitches on off, turns a fair bit, and takes the inside edge of Sibley’s bat as he prods forward and out to the leg side where Pujara takes a simple catch. Ishant Sharma bowls in-ducker as Lawrence falls over and the finger goes up, Ishant takes 300th wicket by dismissing Lawrence lbw. Ashwin is picking the batsmen off with a lovely off-break thrown a couple of inches wider, Stokes pushes forward and feathers an edge through to the safe hands of the keeper. Swan off by the bounce of Bumrah, Root could do nothing as the ball shot through off a good length and hit him on below the knee roll as he anticipated it would be at least a foot higher. Pope having reverse sweep off Nadeem delivery wanted to sweep the ball for four as in the previous ball but this time the ball has more pace and less flight and spoons a catch to midwicket where Rohit makes no mistake. Another good delivery from Nadeem as the ball bursts off a good length turns a mile as Buttler tried to deposit it in the long pasture at cow corner, but this time Pant pouches it and whips off the bails. England 165/7. Ashwin’s ball struck Bess’s pad because he managed to get his bat caught behind his leg guard as he pushed forward and consequently LBW. Another Ashwin off-break catches Archer trapped on the crease and whizzes through the gate to knock back off stump. Ashwin ends with six for 61 as he accepts a return catch from Anderson for a duck. India will chase 420 for victory or bat for just over a day after bowling England out for 178.
