Although Pujara could have been caught on 23, went on to make 50 not out, while Pant is unbeaten on 30 with India 125-3, with an overall lead of 257 with 7 wickets in hand. India, 2-1 up in a series that was postponed last September, are eyeing their first series triumph in England since 2007.

Bairstow reaches the fourth consecutive 50 scores from 81 balls and reached his 11th Test hundred century in 119 balls, five of them this year as England counter-attacks, resuming on 84-5 overnight.  Bairstow edges a Shami full and wide delivery straight to Kohli at first slip. Ben Stokes who was dropped twice, was brilliantly caught by Bumrah off Thakur for 25.

Bairstow was 12 not out overnight, had managed only 13 runs from the first 63 balls he faced, and then exploded after an exchange of words with Virat Kohli smashing 87 off his next 56. Bairstow added 66 for England’s sixth wicket as Stoke struggled to find the right tempo, But Bairstow shared another 92 with Sam Billings.
