England beat India in the third Twenty20 as Suryakumar Yadav’s sensational century efforts were in vain at Trent Bridge.

Chasing 216 the tourists were reduced to 31-3 after five over before Suryakumar’s 48-ball ton his first for India, and dominated a partnership of 119 with Shreyas Iyer, hitting 14 fours and six sixes displaying some flamboyant shots.

But wickets tumbled at the other end as Suryakumar launched an assault at the start of the penultimate over with 41 runs still needed.

The first four balls yielded 16 runs but the 31-year-0ld mistimed his stroke looking to clear the ropes again and was caught at long-off for 117 off Moeen Ali. Chris Jordan bowled the final over as India could muster only 198-9, giving England a consolation win by 17 runs.

Earlier Dawid Malan had earlier top-scored with 77 from 39 balls his first fifty in 11 T20 innings for England in their 215-7. He fell after he top-edged a sweep off leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi in the 17th over and Moeen Ali departed for a golden duck two balls later. Harry Brook’s 19 from 9 balls ensured England’s decent total. Topley took three wickets costing just 22 runs.

India won the T20 series by 2-1 with three- one-day matches which start at  The Oval on Tuesday

India was needing 185 from 15 overs as their star batsman Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Rishabh Pant back in the dressing room.  Suryakumar, the right-hander referred to by his nickname SKY  took down both seam and spin alike. Two drives cleared for off-side six as he opened the face of the bat. He also swept Jordan off his stumps as he took advantage of the short Trent Bridge boundaries.

In the 16th over India will need 66 from 30 balls, Reece Topley had Iyer caught behind for 28 which slowed the Indian momentum. Dinesh Karthick and Ravindera Jadeja both were lbw to David Willey and Richard Gleeson respectively.

Mooen began the 19th over with a wide before Suryakumar cut him for four, smashed a six over long-on, and hammered and shot to the fence.

England captain Jos Buttler:” It was good fun a  fantastic game of cricket and much more like what we’re used to seeing from our side so I was really pleased with our response with the bat. It was some innings from Suryakumar Yadav, one of the best hundreds that I’ve seen and he put us under pressure.

Indian captain Rohit Sharma: “ It was a fantastic chase and we are proud of our fight. Suryakumar Yadav was magnificent to watch. He is unorthodox and has a wide range of shots and never lets the tempo go. He has grown as a player and is going from strength to strength.”

Reece Topley was adjusted as the Player of the Match.
