India wins by 5 wickets.
Rishabh Pant’s 125 not out and Hardik Pandya’s 71 steered India to a five-wicket victory over England in the deciding one-day international at Old Trafford and a 2-1 series win, Chasing 260 India were reduced to 72-4 when Pant and Hardik shared 133 run-stand for the fifth wicket. Pant who could have been stumped on 18, and Craig Overton misjudged a chance to catch Hardik when he had only six, was eventually out when India still needed 55 runs. But Pant went on to complete his maiden ODI century and hit the winning runs by a reverse-sweep off Joe Root’s off-spin, with 47 balls to spare and ended 125 not out. Mohammed Siraj removed Jonny Bairstow and Root, both for ducks, in his first over, then Hardik Pandya earlier took 4 England wickets by introducing miscues at bouncers from Jason Roy for 41, and Stokes leaving England in trouble at 74-4. But Buttler, who was twice hit on the head in the same Siraj over, rebuilt a careful stand of 75 with Moeen and added 49 with his Lancashire team-mate, Liam Livingstone.
England now moves on to a three-match one-day contest against South Africa which begins on Tuesday at Chester-le-Street.
Although the match was most competitive in a series where both sides had previously claimed a one-sided victory apiece. India with greater ability to adapt to the two-paced pitch triumphed thanks to Hardik who led an attack by using the short ball, and wicketkeeper Pant, who has had a fine tour in all three formats. England could have won this match had they not missed their chances in the field and their top-order batting failed to fire across three matches. Reece Topley took the wickets of Shikar Dhawan 1, sliced the ball to point, captain Rohit Sharma 17, edged Topley to first slip and Virat Kohli 17, nicked behind a typical left-arm seamer’s ball angled across him, with Overton following up by removing Suryakumar Yadav. If Buttler had taken the simple stumping chance when Moeen Ali deceived Pant, and Overton got nowhere near Hardik’s miscue off Brydon Carse, the game could have been different. This is now India’s first win over the hosts here since the 2003 World Cup semi-final. England exhausted all their options and the game was getting away from them when Hardik failed to get on top of a Carse bouncer, allowing Ben Stokes to take a fine diving catch at mid-wicket.
