England into Euro 2022 semi final
England reached the semi-final of Euro 2022 Football at Brighton after beating Spain 2-1 and they now face either Sweden or Belgium at Bramall Lane next Tuesday. England had to dig deep into the reserve to come back via a late equaliser and then a spectacular extra-time winner from Georgia Stanway witnessed by 28, 994 inside the stadium.
England conceded the first goal of the tournament and was dominated by Spain’s mastery of the ball as Esther Gonazalez’s 54th-minute opener with substitute Athenea del Castillo tormenting Rachel Daly, put Spain ahead. Spain had been dealt a cruel hand with injuries to Ballon d’Or Winner Alexia Putellas and striker Jennifer Hermoso. Sarina Wiegman’s changes combined to draw England level with six minutes left as Manchester United teammates and best friends combined Alessia Russo heading down for Ella Toone to score. Stanway’s blockbuster provided the final flourish in extra time to strike the winner. England progressed into the quarter-final with 14 unanswered goals in the three games against Austria, Norway, and Northern Ireland, although the encounter against the pre-tournament favorites, Spain was the sternest of tests.
