Rishi Sunak pleas for unity amid profound economic challenges
Rishi Sunak has issued a plea for unity amid profound economic challenges after winning the race to be the next Prime Minister. Sunak promised to serve with integrity and thanked outgoing Prime Minister Liz Truss for leading the country during exceptionally difficult circumstances. He said “ The United Kingdom is a great country but there is no doubt we face a profound economic challenge. We now need stability and unity and I will make it my utmost priority to bring out party and our country together”.
King Charles III will appoint Mr. Sunak, who will take over from Ms. Truss following her resignation just 44 days into her tumultuous premiership last week.
Conservative Party Chairman Jake Berry said it was time for the party to “unite four-square behind Rishi” after a period of intense political turmoil under Ms. Truss’s Premiership.
Rishi was first elected as an MP for the constituency of Richmond in North Yorkshire in 2015 and has experienced a meteoric rise to the apex of British politics in a short time. Before that Mr. Sunak graduated from Winchester College, Oxford University, where he studied politics, philosophy, and economics, and an MBA at Sanford University, followed by investment banking with Goldman Sachs. and is thought to be one of the richest MPs, as his family finances came under intense scrutiny earlier this year when the tax affairs of his wife Akshata Murty, who he met at Stanford, were placed in the spotlight.
Risus Sunak who experienced a hardworking upbringing helped his parents in their Southampton pharmacy and waited tables in the local Indian restaurant.
Sunak was born on 12 May 1980 in Southampton, Hampshire, to African-born Hindu parents of Indian Punjabi descent, Yashvir and Usha Sunak. He is the eldest of three siblings.
The election of Indian-origin Rishi Sunak as the United Kingdom’s Prime Minister is “pretty astounding” and a “ground-breaking milestone”, United States President Joe Biden has said. “It’s a choice. And we make that choice every day. It’s true in our lives and in the life of this nation, especially in the life of a democracy, whether here in America or for the families back in India marking 75 years of independence,” he said. “And whether it’s the United Kingdom, where just today we’ve got the news that Rishi Sunak is now the Prime Minister,” Biden said.
Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan, on Tuesday, lauded Rishi Sunak for becoming the first Indian-origin Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Taking to Instagram, Amitabh dropped a picture which he captioned, “Jai Bharat .. now the UK finally has a new viceroy as its Prime Minister from the Mother Country.”
