Maggie Smithe defies Gravity again! My Old Lady proves a point!
A welcome cast of Kevin Kline, Maggie Smith and Kristin Scott Thomas play out a drama based in a luxurious but decaying Paris apartment which Mathias (Kline) has inherited from his deceased father. Arriving from America, broke but excited, he encounters a myriad of problems with the two feisty ladies living there and discovers that Mathilde (Maggie Smith) was not only his father’s mistress but also, under French law, is entitled to stay in the apartment until she dies as well as charging him rent, which he cannot afford to pay. Bit by bit the threesome get to know each other and Chloe – Mathilde’s daughter from her late husband (Kristen Scott Thomas) and Mathias strike up a bond of friendship and there is a hint of blossoming romance. With stars like these three in the cast you are bound to be treated to good viewing. This film is quite unique in being a drama which has the intimacy of theatre at times, and certainly there are also very good camera techniques which give it compulsion and gravitas. (running time 107 mins). Now on DVD/Blu Ray.
