80 stranded for one hour at Alton Tower as Monorail breaks down
Eighty people were stuck for an hour at 17:25 on 1st July 2015, at the Alton Tower after two monorail broke down on the hottest day of the year. Even the Air rollercoaster temporarily stopped for 20 minutes with several people stranded in mid-air.
It took another hour to walk 80 people off the monorail to safety using evacuation walkways. The trains kept people informed all the time via onboard PA system and were given free refreshments and no one was injured, according to Alton Tower Spokesperson.
The Von roll Monorail with single rail elevated and train suspended from it, at Alton Towers originally built for Expo 86 in Canada.
People waiting to go on the ride used Twitter to vent their anger and said people were left stranded on the air roller coaster.
The park had previously said they are to introduce stricter safety procedures following the aftermath of Smiler crash. Two women Leah Washington 17 and Vicky Balch 20 underwent leg amputation following crash on 2nd June 2015.
