Silvertown Tunnel plans fraught with issues
This is a quote from the current Mayor Boris Johnson about the Silvertown tunnel plans, “The overall daily fraffic flows are expected to show little change if the Silvertown tunnel scheme is implemented – at around 48,000 vehicles in each direction.”
The plans for the new tunnel will cost £1 billion and many regard it as a waste of money. Why would Boris Johnson who is “behind the plans” make a statement like the above which is a quote from the London Evening standard? The proposed tunnel would link Greenwich Peninsula with The Royal Docks. Last week Greenwich became the latest borough to oppose the tunnel on grounds of air pollution issues. Johnson has also written in answer to this saying what is quoted in the beginning of this article – so whose side is he on?
Some say extra tolls on the Blackwall tunnel would solve the problem of traffic and that money invested in pubic transport would solve the problem. Transport for London – Tfl – however has said that more HGV’s and lorries would use the tunnel as they are currently banned from using the northbound Blackwall Tunnel.
