A wild elephant calf, rescued from the Kakkeri forest of the Tholpetty forest range of the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary on 13th June 2016 morning, The one and half months old male calf, was rescued by Forest Department officials after it accidently fell into a trench near the Kakkeri tribal colony near Kattikulam. “Although the forest officials attempted to reunite the calf with the herd, the elephants did not accept it back, as it had come into contact with humans,” according to P Dhaneshkumar, wildlife warden, WSS. Veterinary experts led by V I Jijimon, a forest veterinary officer, administered antibiotics and fluid medicines to the calf who was critical. The calf would be shifted to the Mannarkad forest division in Palakkad district to the Muthanga elephant Kraal.
