Amazing Jyothy Karat
Kozhikode girl Jyothy Karat, an ace photographer, who is one of the first women to venture into an unconventional filed of photography in Kerala and one of the 29 emerging photojournalists in Asia who has showcased her works in Europe, North America and India. Her projects included Gudalur tribes, which will be exhibited at the UN headquarters in New York on February 22 and will be on display till April 17, 2016. Her project for the UN was selected after a French agency hired her to work on a project again for UNESCO’s Green initiative. Her Gudalur project was also exhibited at the UN headquarters in Paris during the G8 summit. She beat a string of talented photographers of Delhi and Mumbai in the initial years and strived to achieve and capture the best photograph that tells her stories as it is.
According to her a photographer should be prepared to work under all weather conditions, and against all odds. She was lucky to have acquired a visual communication degree and learnt photography from a prestigious institute from Ooty, a pictures hill station. She got a special grant from World Press Photo & Konrad Adenauer to do a course of Multimedia journalism in Phillippines. She broke all barriers by jumping off helicopter from 15000 feet in New Zealand, diving 100 feet with 40 sharks in Fiji , surfing the green waves in Australia, climbing the limestones in Thailand and going 2000 feet deep into the earth in Hutti gold mine in India. Her works were also featured in the Lonely Planet Magazine. Failure happens all the time to everyone, and sometimes can have a bad effect on us depending on the way we react to it, the greatest example, when it comes down to failure is the American inventor Thomas Edison who failed more than 10,000 times before he created the light bulb. Jyothy’s initial days in photography was filled with controversies as every time her shot failed she came back to the same scene to take a better shot after and analysing what went wrong. As a talented photographer her strength lies in taking calculated risks and know when to take the shot as stupid mistakes can be costly.
