Ambulance blocked by flock of lions
A thirty-two-year-old woman gave birth to a baby boy, around 2:30 am on June 129th 2017, in an ambulance, surrounded by 12 lions including three males from adjacent forest, who created an impromptu road block. Lions appear to stage a road block after their kill and were too full and too lazy to move off the tarmac.
Manguben Makwana of Lunaspur village in Amreli district, Gir forest, Gujarat, Western India, as the lions blocked the road.
The incident lasted around 20 minutes, the staff of the 108 ambulance held their nerve and helped Makwana to give birth, while the flock of lions blocked the vehicle passage.
The Emergency Management Technician Ashok contacted a physician and was guided over the phone to take directions, while driver Jadav monitored the movements of the “curious Lions”, although he tried to scare them away, by starting the vehicle, but they refused to move and sat in front of the ambulance.
Eventually the lions lost interest and gave up, and finally the mother and child were admitted to Jafrabad hospital and are doing well.
In the wild, lions live for around 16 years and based on long-term understanding of population dynamics, and threats faced by lions and other large predators in world that is increasingly dominated by the human enterprise who are after trophies.
