Apple has launched Clips, a new free app for adding filters and special effects to photos and videos in iPhones and iPads and could become a major player in the emerging augmented reality (AR).

Clips is a simple editing tool like Snapchat’s selfie lenses and Instagram’s Prisma, which can manipulate photos and videos incorporating music from iTunes, emojis, and captions created from user’s voice.

Clips, available from April 2017,  will give users of iPhone and iPad a new identity to express themselves through new look shareable videos over social media.

You can record a bunch of snippets and merge them together in one video and then add music, text, titles which support up to 36 languages, filters, emojis, shapes, full-screen animated posters and backgrounds to choose from.

Apple’s acquisitions of PrimeSense, Metaio and Flyby  Media could offer more sophisticated face recognition and 3D effects.

Apple also introduced a “ Special edition” red colour iPhonem and 9.7in screen iPad with faster processor and better display.

You can also have more control over who sees your Clips videos and build a new video-centric social network. Clips will work on iPhone 5s and all newer devices running iOS 10.3.
