Australia was left with 90 to win, lost two wickets in the process to take a 1-0 lead in the four-Test series. Opener Joe Burns was 51 no tout completing the chase with a six, as the day-night test was completed midway through the third day.

The second test begins in Melbourne on 26 December.

Indian captain Virat Kohli will miss the remainder of the series to return home for the birth of his first child.

When India resumed on 9-1 a lead of 62 runs,  with the remainder of the tourists’ inning taking only 15.2 overs for the incredible collapse in test history.

The first four wickets of the day all fell with the score on 15 in the space of 29 deliveries, with India having no answer to the brilliance of Hazlewood and Cummins. Captain Virat Kohli fell for four, with India 19-6, with the last man Shami was forced to retire when he was struck by a delivery from Cummins, adding to an Indian injury list that already includes batsman Rohit Sharma and fast bowler Ishant Sharma.

Australian captain Tim Paine said, “ We were expecting a real dogfight right to the end, late today four and maybe day five, but it shows the talent we have with the ball. If there’s anything in the wicket and our boys execute, that is what can happen”.

Indian captain Virat Kohli said, “ It is very hard to put my feelings into words. We collapsed completely. When you work hard for days, then literally an hour puts you in a position where it’s impossible to win, it really hurts. It’s something that needs to be reflected on and learned from, and we need to put in better performances going forward.”
