Bolsonaro the new Brazilian president is ushering in new era
Jair Bolsonaro (63), as known as “Tropical Trump”, Brazil’s new president and his wife Michelle wave to the 115, 000 people who lined the streets as they are driven to his swearing-in ceremony in Brasilia’s Cathedral to the Congressional building, yesterday. Brazil’s 38th President in his inaugural speech, he promised to combat corruption, restore traditional family values, respect all religions, govern for all Brazilians and shore up the ailing public finances “My vow is to strengthen Brazil’s democracy and create a new virtuous cycle to open markets, carry out important structural reforms”. Ten heads of state participated in the inauguration joined by twelve foreign ministers, eighteen special envoys and three directors of International organisations. Jair Bolsonaro won the presidency in October 2018 by beating his rival left-wing candidate from the PT (Workers Party) Fernando Haddad.

Brazil’s annual GDP growth in Q4 2020 is 2.6 per cent compared with 1.8 per cent with Mexico. Brazil had a 7 per cent decline in GDP during 2016-17.
