England 1st Innings 314/4 (89.0 ov) AN Cook 105 off 172, 15 fours, JE Root 141 not out off 246, 18 fours, Mohammad Amir 63-2, Rahat Ali 69-2.

At Old Trafford Alistair Cook and Joe Root both completed their centuries and made Pakistan toil on day one. But Alex Hales, James Vince and Gary Balance all fell cheaply as there was middle order collapse. Cook’s 29th Test hundred took him alongside Don Bradman, was bowled by Mohammad Amir for 105. Root was 87 not out upon Cook’s dismissal was unbeaten on 141.
