26th Seed Italian, Flavia Penetta (33) from Brindisi, wins first grand slam as she beat Roberta Vinci in the final 7-6 (7-4)6-2 and will retire with a winner’s cheque of £2.15m $3.3m. She was the architect of engineering one of the biggest shocks in tennis history by ousting Serena Williams.
