GB women’s curling wins gold at winter Olympics
Great Britain ended the Beijing Winter Olympics with two medals – a gold for Women’s curling and silver for Men’s curling.
Eve Muirhead’s fourth attempt, after heart-breaking near misses and career-saving surgery on an arthritic hip, finally has her Olympic curling gold medal, said “ Without these girls being so strong, this dream would not have come true. They helped me become a better curler and better person. Together we are a very, very strong unit and I think today we proved that.”
Muirhead and team-mates Vicky Wright. Jen Dodds and Hailey Duff scored a superb four in the seventh end to effectively clinch the title. It emulates the gold won by Rhona Howie’s team at Salt Lake City in 2002.
“It’s a dream come true” Muirhead, on the medal podium and added “That was my third semi-final, and the two I lost were hard but I bounced back and here we are. We are Olympic champions. It’s such a special moment.”
Three thousand athletes competed in 109 events across 15 disciplines during the past two weeks.
International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach called for political leaders “ around the world” to be inspired by the athletes’” example of solidarity and peace. The unifying power of the Olympic Games is stronger than the forces that want to divide us. You not only respected each other: you embraced each other, even if your countries are divided by conflict.”
