Ozil 65’ Bonucci 78’ pen
Germany beat Italy after 6-5 penalty shootout win in Bordeaux and are through to face France or Iceland in the Semi-finals. That was the longest penalty shootout in their history as Italy pushed them hard held them to 1-1 draw. In the 65th minute Ozil fired Germany ahead from close range which Italy’s Bonucci equalised in the 78 minute with a penalty after Jerome Boateng carelessly handballed to end the game to extra time. Germany have not missed a single penalty in a shootout for the last 40 years.
Germany have still never lost a shootout since the 1976 final of this competition when they lost to Czechoslovakia 40 years and 13 days ago. Germany had scored 21 times from the spot in succession in major tournament shootouts but missed three times. Left back Jonas Hector hit the winning kick after Mesut Ozil, Thomas Muller and Bastian Schweinsteiger had all missed and for Italy Graziano Pele, Leonardo Bonucci, Matteo Darmian and Simone Zaza.
Germany had 62 per cent possession, 3 shots on target and 7 penalties.
