Happy Diwali Worldwide including Empire State Building lighting up orange to celebrate festival of lights
Diwali ( Deepavali) a festival of lights stretching five days mainly celebrated by Hindus during the Hindu Lunisolar month Kartika ( between October and November). The festival of light is observed by Hindus, Sikhs, and Jains worldwide, the victory of good over evil and commemorates Lord Rama’s and Sita’s return to the city of Ayodhya, after defeating the evil king Ravana, after years of exile.
For many Hindus, Diwali honours the Hindu goddess of wealth Laxmi. The lights and lamps are to help Laxmi, find her way into peoples’ homes bringing prosperity and wealth in the years to come.
In Bengal people worship the goddess Kali, the destroyer of evil forces, during Diwali while in Nepal people celebrate Lord Krishna’s victory over the wicked king Narakaasura.
Rangoli is a popular Diwali Tradition with beautiful patterns made using colourful powders and flowers. People draw rangoli on the floor by the entrance of their homes to welcome the gods and bring good luck.
The Empire State Building in New York City, United States, was lit up in orange to commemorate “Happy Diwali from NYC! We’re joining the Federation of Indian Association s of the tri-state area of New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut in celebrating the festival of lights by turning our own lights all orange tonight”. a tweet said.
