Celebrate World Ocean Day on June 8. What do we know about our ocean? The covers Ocean covers 70 per cent of the Earth’s surface, includes 96 per cent of the Earth’s water, and is where life began 3.5 billion years ago. Australia’s Great Barrier Reef is the largest living structure on Earth and can be seen from the Moon. The deepest part of the Ocean is Marina Trench at nearly 7 miles beneath the waves. Coral Reef covers only 1/50th of the clear floor and one-quarter of all marine species make the coral reef their home, as no light penetrates the ocean at a depth greater than 3,280feet. The Gulf stream transports more water than all of the Earth’s rivers combined. The mid-ocean ridge crisscrosses the globe for over 40, 000 miles. And is the largest single geographical feature on Earth. Ninety-five per cent of the ocean remains unexplored.
