India wins by 50 runs.
Hardik Pandya steps onto his back foot and cuts square for four. The next delivery is slapped right back past Liam Livingstone for another boundary. Hardik then clips the final ball of Sam Curran over off his pads for a single to bring up the India 150.
Hardik hit 51 and took four England wickets.
In reply, Jos Buttler had been stood at the non-striker’s end watching the ball hoop away from Jason Roy and then Bhuvenshwar Kumar gets one to swing back into the new England captain and goes between bat and pad. The ball clips Buttler’s pad and into the stumps, England was 1-1. Arshdeep Singh is the second Indian bowler to begin their T20 International career with a maiden, the previous bowler was Ajit Agarkar in India’s first-ever T20 match against South Africa in 2006. Dawid Malan, makes a beautiful late cut using the pace of the ball off Hardik Pandya to guide the ball to the boundary for four, but the very next ball as Malan attempts to open the face of the bat to run it down to the vacant third region but inside edges it on to the wickets. India has found 3.1°swing in the first two overs of this match. England 29-2.
England captain Jos Buttler said “ We’ve been outplayed today I thought India bowled fantastically well and we couldn’t get back in the game from that point.. The way India bowled at the start, the ball swung consistently in the first six overs and they took early wickets. We needed to hit it in the stands to stop it from swinging. But credit to India I thought they were fantastic.”
Indian captain Rohit Sharma said “ Was a great performance from ball one. There was an intent shown by the batters. The pitch was good so you could back yourself. At no point did we think we are trying to take the game ahead of ourselves. We back our basics of the game very well. You have to make use of the six overs when the fielders are outside and there is an approach we want to take. Sometimes it comes off, sometimes it doesn’t. That’s why the sport is challenging. All the players need to buy into it, the whole batting unit needs to see which way the team is going. Hardick who prepared himself from the IPL bowled with some variation. The opening bowlers swung the ball well which stopped England’s batters in the powerplay. We took into consideration with the toss”.
The 2nd T20 is on Saturday at 14:30 BST.
