The host was bowled out for 200 early on the fourth day leaving India needing only 70 to win the five-day test match.
Debutant Mohammed Siraj took 3-37, including wickets of Cameron Green, who offered lone resistance in making 45 for Australia and to make India bat again.
India slipped to 19-2 before Shubman Gill steadied the ship with stand-in captain Ajinkya Rahane. It was a remarkable turnaround for India, who were bundled out for 36 their lowest score in an eight-wicket defeat only a week ago in Adelaide.
The Third Test begins on 6th January in Sydney.
Indian head coach Ravi Shastri said “ To be rolled over for 36 and then three days later, to get up and be ready to punch was outstanding. This will go down in the annals of Indian cricket, world cricket, as one of the great comebacks in the history of the game.”
