Elizabeth Truss has beaten ex-chancellor Rishi Sunak to become the new Tory leader, and the new UK PM, after winning the contest to replace Boris Johnson as Conservative Party leader. Truss, is a former Liberal Democrat activist who marched against Margaret Thatcher in the 1980s, but who now claims to be the keeper of the Thatcherite flame. She vows to deal with the energy crisis by cutting taxes.
Rishi Sunak, (42), who has been MP for Richmond, in North Yorkshire, since 2015, says he will stand again as an MP at the next general election, despite losing to Liz Truss in the Conservative Leadership election after getting only 43 per cent of votes to Ms. Truss’s 57 per cent. He is not expected to be in Ms. Truss’s cabinet. He said the eight-week long leadership campaign had “obviously highlighted differences” but he insisted that “there’s far more that unites us”. The disagreements were “in the past” and it was now time to “look forward”, he added.
