Luxury Intercontinental Wonderland build on a quarry
The InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland , situated beside a man-made lake and houses a music arena and Wedding hall and has 15 floors below ground level, with two to offer rooms with saltwater aquarium costing about £390m ($500m) which is scheduled to completed later this year. The hotel is also attached to a theme park aimed at children to take advantage of Chinese with disposable income, looking for experiences.
The rooms theme is based on quarry’s industrial past featuring exposed pipes with lot of underground galleries.
Housed in two glass buildings in Songjiang, downtown Shanghai, built on the site of an abandoned 100 meter deep quarry, 19 stories of which 17 are below ground level with two underwater floors, designed by Cheng Chung Design and AB Concept. The hotel is designed in an “S” shape utilising a convex to concave form. It lobby is made to replicate a flying saucer as it would descend into the quarry. A vertical atrium made of glass will run from the bottom of the hotel to the ground level, with a Gizmag waterfall above ground. The five-star hotel would include extreme sports facilities like bungee jumping and rock climbing based on a structure which is cantilevered from the rock face, conference rooms to accommodate 1000 people, a grand ballroom and restaurants and cafes on the ground floor and has 400 bedrooms.
