MAD MAX FURY ROAD – EYE POPPING ACTION IN THE DESERT
The Mad Max formula is well explored and ridden…and this new film is an absolute treat for fans. The cast is formidable with Tom Hardy taking over from Mel Gibson as Max, together with Charlize Theron, Nicholas Hoult, Hugh Keays-Byrne, Zoe Kravitz, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Riley Keough, and Abbey Lee Kershaw. The story begins with a tyrannical ruler playing games with his people in depriving them of water and then giving it to them in huge amounts whilst they nearly expire in the process. Bear in mind that this story is fantasy and highly stylised – the costumes, and make up are gothic/angel cum sci fi and even so the audience are somehow drawn into liking these war-gods and throw-backs and over-dressed predators and fighters for good and evil.
It is a waiting game to see when Max will lose his horrid iron mask which covers his face and is tethered at the back of his neck and he is deep in the desert by the time Tom Hardy’s face is revealed though his tan and pout is maintained as well as his brooding eyes and athletic build stops us from laughing at him. At one point one of the warriors in this fight between life death and everything in between yells “and all this for a family disagreement!” or similar. The variety of motorised transport for the warring factions chasing through the desert includes a gothic style figure tethered to the highest front of the one of them as he endlessly strums his electric guitar to serenade the convoy as they shoot their way through the desert. There is drama as one would expect about vehicles running properly and the availability of fuel as well as water for the warriors. Of course, nothing would be right without a bevy of scantily clad babes who rescue Max and stun the viewers before they all career off fighting warlords and accompanying bikers towards a safe destination ….before they turn back …and so the show goes on…. I don’t want to give any more of the story away as it would ruin your enjoyment of the film but do rely on being heavily influenced in your fun by wacky vehicles, wacky characters and wacky plotlines. Enjoy.
