Massacre in Nice kills 84
84 killed and hundreds injured including children after a lorry slammed through a crowd celebrating Bastille Day at Nice
The attack began after the firework display on the seafront in Nice, marking France’s day of Independence, Bastille Day. The speeding white lorry, driven by 31-year-old Franco-Tunisian, laden with fake guns and grenades, at 22:30 (22:30GMT), swayed and zigzagged through the Promenade des Anglais at high speed, in an apparent attempt to hit more people. The driver opened fire on people in the crowd, according to local reports Police fired back and the driver was eventually shot dead. The aftermath of the scene showed the windscreen and front of the lorry raked with bullets.
President Francois Hollande said the attack was of “an undeniable terrorist nature.”
The dead and injured were taken to the local Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Nice. The hospital launched its crisis mode for exceptional health situations and put on an emergency number for families 00 33 (0) 4 93 72 22 22.
