Millions Missing over Fraudulent Romance Internet Crime
A man calling himself Christian Anderson with a copy of “The Game” – a book on the art of seduction was arrested on fraud charges after an investigation conducted by DCI Gary Miles of the Met’s Falcon cyber crime and fraud task force exposed the scam where people “were ruthlessly manipulated by men and women pretending to love them”.
The conmen have swindled over £4M in “romance fraud” in the past year Scotland Yard officials warned. More than 100 victims have been targeted in London with one businesswoman in her forties losing £1.6M to a man she met on a dating website. Another woman was asked for a loan from a man claiming to be working on an engineering project in Benin, and gave him more and more money after a series of elaborate requests. This involved fraudulently created documents and letters to back up his requests for money from her.
DCI Gary Miles has over 29 years’ experience with the Metropolitan Police. He detected people talking on the phone and internet for hours on end exchanging loving pleasantries which were mostly designed to extract large payments of money to the fraudulent team. More than 100 people have been targeted. 2 men are due to be sentenced anytime now – Nigerian Ife Ojo 31 and Olusegun Agbaje 43. Agbaje worked in NHS administration in Essex.
