Modi’s BJP in historic landslide victory in India
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s BJP has won India’s election in another landslide victory. Results announce so far Bharathiya Janata Party is set to win 300 of 543 seats in parliament despite some anti-incumbent feeling joblessness has risen to record high, farm income plummeted and industrial production slumped and several Indian were hit hard by the currency ban (demonitisation). It’s often said that whoever wins Uttar Pradesh wins the Indian election, as the state sends 80 MPs, more than any other –to parliament.
The opposition alliance headed by Rahul Gandhi’s Congress Party has admitted defeat. The vote hae been widely viewed as referendum on the prime minister’s Hindu nationalist politics.
This year there were over 900 million voters eligible to take part in seven round of voting making it the largest election the world had ever seen. Over 500 million people voted in a marathon six-week election process. Modi has also won a larger share of the vote than the 2014 elections.
Mr Modi tweeted “Thank you India! The faith placed in our alliance is humbling and gives us strength to work even harder to fulfil people’s aspirations”. Modi also tweets: People of Kashi are remarkable! When I had gone to Kashi to file my nomination papers, they confidently said they would manage the entire campaign without me having to come back even once…and manage they did! I bow to the citizens of Kashi. Looking forward to serving them.
In 2014 the BJP won 282 seats with its allies it secured 336 seats in that parliament compared the Congress which won 44 and its allied took up just 60 seats in the lower house.
