Muguruza beat Williams, to win Wimbledon
Garbine Muguruza, 23-year-old, Spaniard, beat her “role model” Venus Williams to win her first Wimbledon final.
Muguruza, who had failed to reach a final in the 23 tournaments since she won the French Open last year defeated five-time champion Williams 7-5, 6-0 and became the second Spanish woman to win the Wimbledon singles title.
Muguruza showed her composure in the critical moments by saving 21 out of 25 break points, and although Williams might have had the fastest serve at 114mph, Muguruza’s 77% win rate on her first serve was huge.
Williams dropped serve four times, while Muguruza held throughout the match as he did not drop a serve either in her quarter-final or semi-final wins.
From behind 5-4 in the first set, Muguruza won nine straight games to take the title, after winning a vital 19-point rally at 5-5 and at 15-40 on her serve in the first set, with the second set lasting only 26 minutes. The match lasted one hour and 17 minutes.
15th seed Muguruza will climb to fifth in the new WTA world ranking on Monday.
The 10-time Grand Slam singles Champion, Williams having gone from being close to winning the first set to losing the final in only 37 minutes.
Born in Venezuela and move to Spain at the early age of six, Muguruza’s mother Scarlet Blanco from Venezuela and her father Jose Antonio from Spain.
