Netflix global push to be overseen by Whetstone
Rachel Whetstone is dumping Facebook for Netflix to run global communications for the streaming service, as it focuses on international markets that have become the source of most of its subscribers growth.
The British Silicon Valley operator who had already worked in past at Uber and Google before moving to Facebook last year. Netflix is spending a growing share of its $8bn programming budget outside the US. Netflix plans to spend over $1bn in Europe alone.
Whetstone joined Facebook as vice-president of communications for Instagram, WhatsApp an Messenger. Before Uber she spent a decade at Google as a senior Vice-president of communication and public policy. However, during her tenure in Google she did ran into regulatory trouble in Europe by the European Commission over claims that Google has abused its dominant position in search.
